Here are some frequently asked questions about GoTranslation:
1What exactly is GoTranslation and what does it offer?

GoTranslation is an online web service which offers professional, humanly assisted, machine translation services, from any language to one or many other languages.

The service includes:

  • PDF text conversion and most common file type support.
  • Text Analysis for adopting the AI processes to the specific subject matter.
  • Terminology Extraction and Glossary Creation, allowing for terminology consistency in the resulting translation.
  • Glossary Editor allowing the user to adopt the generated glossary to the preferred term translations.
  • Assisted Machine Translation with the use of glossaries and previous translations.
  • Formatting of the translated document to match the source.
  • Bilingual document creation for easy evaluation and review.
2What is the definition of Machine Translation (MT)?
Is the automatic translation of text from one natural language to another using a computer system.
3If I upload a PDF document, what type of translated document will I get in return?
If the uploaded file is in PDF format, then the translated document you will receive will be in Word format so that you can edit it. In addition, to help with revision a bilingual document will also be provided as well as the generated glossary.
4What about the other types of monolingual documents, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.?
If you upload a document in Word, you will receive the translated document in Word format. The same applies for PowerPoint, Text, Excel etc. To help with revision a bilingual document will also be provided as well as the generated glossary.
5What are the Bilingual files?
Bilingual files are documents that contain both the original source language as well as the translated target language. They can be a Word document with source and target language columns, an Excel spreadsheet or an XLIFF file that is produced by specialized Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools.
6What do I get back, if I upload a bilingual file from Trados Studio (.sdlxliff), Phrase (.mxliff) or MemoQ (.mqxliff)?
You will get the bilingual file back, with the MT generated translations in the target segments that are not Locked and have a less than a 100% match value. The status of all the segments remains As Is in the original file. In addition, you will receive the translations in a TMX format translation memory, as well as the generated glossary for further and future use.
7What is a Translation Memory and what is needed for?
A translation memory is a bilingual file containing past translated sentences that are relevant to the text to be translated. It is used by our system to find similar sentences to the sentences needing translation and use them as examples so that the system will adopt the translation to the style, form and terminology of these examples.
8What type of Translation Memory (TM) should I upload?
Please upload a good quality project related translation memory in TMX format containing only the required source and target language. You can send your master TM for the project or create a project TM using your CAT tool and the lowest possible match threshold (e.g. 30% for Trados Studio) to create a TM with all the relevant to the project translation units. Then export it in TMX format and upload it in GoTranslation.
9What is a Glossary and what is it used for?
A glossary is a bilingual or multilingual file that contains terms (words or sequences of words) that have a specific meaning in the specific document context and domain. The client glossary is merged with the automatically created glossary maintaining the client translations on the relevant terms. The resulting glossary then is used for terminology consistency during the translation.
10What type of Glossary should I upload to GoTranslation?
The Glossary that should be uploaded to GoTranslation should be in Excel format and contain only the Source and Target language in the first and second column respectively. The first row should contain the source and target language as declared in GoTranslation. The glossary should contain terms relating to the document to be translated.
11Is Machine Translation as reliable as human translation?
Currently Machine Translation output cannot be as good as a translation performed by a professional human translator.
12What are the best practices when translating Bilingual documents?

To get the best translation out of our GoTranslation AI translation system, provide assistance (good glossaries and translation memories) to help it adapt the translation to your terminology and language style. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Provide a project glossary, if available, to help with a) terms that might have not been identified as important for the project by the terminology extraction system and b) ensure that the translation of the extracted terms follows that of the project glossary.
  2. Provide a project translation memory, if available, to help with adopting the translation to the required language form and style and ensure consistency with previous translations.
  3. Edit the automatically created glossary to ensure that the terms are translated the way you want.
  4. Pre-translate the bilingual document with the appropriate translation memory to make sure that 100% and higher match segments will not be translated differently (Locked, 100%, and higher matches are not changed by GoTranslation).
13Why are there minor differences in the word counts?
GoTranslation extracts word counts directly from the document, without the use of the tool that created it e.g. Word, Excel, Trados Studio etc. As a result, there might be minor differences in the word counts.
14Why the payable word count in bilingual files contains the word count from segments that are not actually translated i.e. locked or of 100% and higher match?
All the segments of the document pass multiple times from the LLM part of our system, to be analysed, to extract terminology, and even to translate. This is done in order to find all the useful information about the way the document should be translated, extract all the terms available in the document and translate all the segments in context. In the end, the translations of segments that should not be changed are simply not used. So, the processing cost associated with the document is proportional to the total words of the document and not just the words that are in non-locked or less than 100% match segments.
15What is the meaning of “Non-readable documents”?
It is important to know that your document(s) must be in a machine-readable format. Machine readable means that it can be processed. Types of documents like pictures .jpeg or .png etc., or documents that are locked with a password are not machine readable; and therefore, cannot be processed. Our system will notify you about this before proceeding. Nevertheless, if you submit, for example a Word document which contains pictures, then the system will process the text and everything else that can be processed, but not the pictures. Text contained in pictures will not be translated. This will not affect the document’s layout and the pictures will remain in their original places. 16Why can you not process non-readable documents?
CAT tools and MT systems cannot “read” this type of documents and, consequently, if they cannot read them, they cannot process them.
17What can I do if I want to translate a non-readable document?
